Stitch Fix review: Is the clothing subscription worth it?

What is Stitch Fix?

Like most other curated clothing boxes, Stitch Fix mails you a hand selected package of items directly to your front door, at a frequency of your choosing, for nothing more than the price of the clothing you decide to keep (with a minimum $20 “styling fee”). You start by taking a fairly in-depth style quiz which asks you about everything from your size, budget, style, and what parts of the body you like to keep covered / show off. It also asks you how adventurous you would like to be with your style. From the basic staples to fashion-forward, these boxes have you covered. A personal stylist will use your style profile and any notes you may include.

Pro tip: let them know if you have a wedding or a beach vacation coming up to curate a box of clothing and accessories tailored to your needs.

How much does Stitch Fix cost?

Aside from the cost of the clothes, the average Stitch Fix cost comes with a $20 “styling fee” — but luckily it’s redeemable in credit toward your purchase. This box is paired with an easy-to-use app, or you can choose to checkout via the website. Bonus: You can look at your clothes online before they ship so you can reject anything you know you won’t like!

How Stitch Fix Works

Stitch Fix

The first curated clothing box I ever signed up for was Stitch Fix. That was over five years ago, and I keep coming back (remember, no contractual commitment means I’m able to skip or put on hold whenever I wanted). Stitch Fix offers a specially curated box for you with five items. They are delivered to your door with the frequency of your choosing (plus there is an ad hoc option and you can even choose the exact day you want it to show up), and usually only take a couple days to arrive, depending on where you live. You get three days to try on and decide what you want to keep before throwing the rest into the prepaid USPS bag provided in the shipment and checking out via either the app or website — both of which are very intuitive.

Along with the styling fee (again, which is $20) being redeemable as a credit towards the clothes that were styled, there is also 25% discount if you purchase all five items. They also have a one time yearly option for $50 that gives you an unlimited amount of fixes — again, redeemable in credit.

Are Stitch Fix clothes high quality?

Winter time Stitch Fix

The clothing that comes from Stitch Fix is great quality although you are definitely going to get what you pay for: If you set your bottoms and shoes to “the cheaper the better” you probably won’t be getting those apple bottom jeans or the boots with the fur.

As far as the quality, I usually set everything between $50 – $150 (as you can see in the above image) and in the time I’ve been using Stitch Fix, I’ve had to send two tops back for ridiculous shrinkage while washing, per instructions, thank you very much. These two tops account for about 1% of the clothing I’ve kept. On the flip side, there is still clothing in my closet that I purchased from some of my first boxes that are going strong.

The Stitch Fix bottom line

If you are like me and get overwhelmed in a department store a curated clothing box is precisely what you have been looking for.
