Health-boosting ginger shots: fad or fact?

The rise of the ginger shot

“Ginger shots have gained extreme popularity in recent years”, says Reema Patel, registered dietitian at Dietitian Fit. “Typically, the shots are concentrated ginger juice, and may also contain honey, turmeric, cayenne pepper, or orange and lemon juice.”

Ginger is the star of the show in these health shots; this natural root contains bioactive compounds such as gingerols and shogaols that are thought to benefit our health in a number of ways1.

The rise of the ginger shot may be a recent trend but ginger itself has been used to treat ailments since ancient times2.

Ginger shot benefits

There is a wealth of research evidencing the health benefits of ginger, including its ability to boost your immune system and ward off illnesses.

But how this relates to ginger shots is another story. “There isn’t enough human research to completely outline the benefits of ginger shots,” cautions Patel.

This is not to say that ginger in liquid form doesn’t contain the same benefits, but the following research should be considered with caution, as most information is based on ginger in other forms, such as powders or capsules.

Registered dietitian Elouise Rice discusses the health and immune-boosting properties of ginger shots:

1. Anti-emetic properties

Rice says: “Ginger is well known for its ability to reduce nausea. It has been found in some research to improve nausea in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy3. There is also limited evidence that it may be able to help with motion sickness and morning sickness in individuals who are pregnant4. However, you should always consult your doctor before taking a new supplement if you are pregnant.”

2. Anti-inflammatory properties

Rice says: “Ginger has been found to lower inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP). Therefore, taking ginger may help to both prevent and manage such chronic inflammatory conditions5.”

3. Weight loss properties

Rice says: “There is a limited body of research which shows that ginger supplementation may aid weight loss6. It is thought that this may be because it can transform white fat tissue into brown fat tissue. Brown fat tissue is more advantageous as it improves metabolism and energy expenditure.

“Ginger may also aid weight loss through other mechanisms such as: appetite control, creating heat in the body which increases calorie expenditure, and breaking fat cells down and preventing new ones from forming. That being said, ginger alone will not help you to lose those few pounds you can’t seem to shift – your overall diet and exercise is still important.”

4. Heart disease and type 2 diabetes

Rice says: “Ginger supplementation in the diet has been shown to both reduce and regulate blood sugar levels. Ginger can also positively impact insulin resistance, blood lipid (fat) profile, and promote weight loss, which when combined, shows promise for treating type 2 diabetes.

“Ginger may also have a protective effect against heart disease through multiple mechanisms such as reducing blood pressure, decreasing inflammation, increasing good cholesterol (HDL) levels, and improving our overall lipid profile.

“This being said, most findings are from animal studies, so we still have a long way to go until this is a legitimate treatment recommended for humans with type 2 diabetes or heart disease.”

5. Digestion

Rice says: “Ginger has been found to support gut health by reducing bloating, dyspepsia (indigestion), and flatulence, and by relieving constipation. This may be because ginger can speed up gastric emptying – the process of food moving from your stomach to your small intestine7.”

Ginger shot downsides

Research gaps

Before you jump on the ginger shot bandwagon, remember that most studies investigate ginger in forms other than ginger juice. Much of the research is also based on animals or human cells in test tubes – in vitro studies – and Rice advises that more research is needed before ginger shots can be recommended to prevent or treat illnesses.

So, there’s little evidence around ginger shots specifically, but there’s also no clear evidence to show that they’re not healthy, immune-boosting, or safe.

As with most things in life, its all about moderation: “Researchers remain uncertain regarding the maximum safe dosage of ginger and appropriate duration of treatment,” adds Rice.

Side effects

Side effects to ginger are rare, and usually only occur when the herb interacts with certain medications.

Possible side effects:

  • Mild gastrointestinal upset may happen in rare cases.
  • Large amounts of ginger can thin your blood. If you are on blood thinning medication, such as warfarin, Patel warns that caution is advised if consuming ginger shots.
  • As ginger can lower blood sugar levels, if you are on medication for blood sugar control it’s important to be mindful of your ginger intake.

Ginger shot recipes vary, but typically the additional ingredients used to add flavour to these juice shots – such as turmeric, cayenne spice, and lemon – are also safe and healthy to drink in moderation.

Price tags

The final downside is the price tag. Rice points out that these trendy juice shots are expensive for their size: “A 60 ml ginger shot can set you back £2-3, whereas, buying 100 g of raw fresh ginger will only set you back 50p or so.”

Ginger may boost your health in many ways.

Although robust evidence supports its benefits, research on the shots themselves is limited.

As most of the following research is based on high-dose ginger supplements, it’s unclear whether ginger shots have the same effects.

Powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

Ginger boasts many potent anti-inflammatory compounds, including a variety of antioxidants, which are substances that protect your body from damage by unstable molecules called free radicals.

For example, ginger is packed with gingerols, paradols, sesquiterpenes, shogaols, and zingerone, all of which have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (2, 3).

Numerous test-tube and animal studies show that ginger extract reduces inflammation in those with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory gut disease, asthma, and certain cancers (4, 5, 6, 7).

Human studies reveal similar results.

A 2-month study in 64 people with type 2 diabetes found that taking 2 grams of ginger powder daily significantly reduced levels of inflammatory proteins like tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (CRP), compared to taking a placebo (8).

In another study, male athletes who received 1.5 grams of ginger powder daily for 6 weeks had significant reductions in levels of inflammatory markers, such as TNF-alpha, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1-beta), compared to athletes who received a placebo (9).

Additionally, other common ingredients found in ginger shots, including lemon and turmeric, have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (10, 11).

May soothe nausea and digestive issues

Ginger is a common natural treatment for stomach issues, such as bloating and indigestion.

Studies demonstrate that supplementing with ginger can help increase the movement of food through your stomach, improve indigestion, decrease bloating, and reduce intestinal cramping (12).

Ginger is also used to help treat nausea and often taken by pregnant women seeking a natural and effective nausea remedy that is safe for both them and their baby.

A study in 120 pregnant women showed that those who took 750 mg of ginger daily for 4 days experienced significant reductions in nausea and vomiting compared to a control group. No adverse side effects were reported (13).

Ginger may also help relieve nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy and surgery (14, 15).

Additionally, animal studies suggest that ginger may protect against and treat stomach ulcers (16, 17).

May benefit immune health

Due to its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, ginger may boost immune health.

Although acute inflammation is an important part of normal immune response, chronic inflammation can harm your immune system, potentially increasing your chances of illness (18).

Upping your intake of antioxidant-rich foods and beverages like ginger shots may combat inflammation and keep your immune system healthy.

Many test-tube and animal studies suggest that ginger can enhance immune response. What’s more, ginger has powerful antiviral and antibacterial properties (19, 20).

One test-tube study found that fresh ginger had antiviral effects against human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), which causes respiratory infections, and helped boost immune response against HRSV (21).

Plus, many common ginger shot ingredients, such as honey and lemon juice, may also improve immune health. For example, both honey and lemon have been shown to have antibacterial and antiviral effects (22, 23).

Additionally, honey may safeguard your immune system and enhance immune response (24).

Other benefits

Aside from the above benefits, ginger shots may:

  • Benefit blood sugar control. Several studies note that ginger supplements can reduce blood sugar levels and improve hemoglobin A1c, a marker of long-term blood sugar control (25).
  • Boost weight loss. Ginger has been shown to significantly reduce body weight, decrease hunger, and increase the thermic effect of food, or the calories you burn during digestion (26, 27).
  • Exhibit anticancer properties. Research indicates that ginger may help protect against certain types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer, possibly due to its antioxidant content (28, 29).

Depending on additional ingredients, such as spinach and apple, ginger shots may offer other health benefits, too.

I’m already a massive fan of healthful ‘shots’ to keep my body running like clockwork. I’ve been making Ginger and Turmeric shots for over a year and genuinely attribute these to keeping me going during times when I could easily burn out. A few Notes on the Recipe

  • I always make a large batch of immunity shots, so that I can flash freeze it and thaw, as needed. Feel free to scale yours, to make smaller amounts.
  • Ideally, the ratio of ginger juice to lemon juice should be 1:1. Simply juice your ginger first to see how much it yields and then add the correct amount of lemon juice, accordingly.

The Ginger Shots How-To

Start by rinsing and scrubbing the ginger root. There’s need to peel it, just cut it into small enough piece so they can pass through the juicer.

Then, begin by juicing the ginger.

Once the ginger is juiced, check your yield amount and Juice the lemons accordingly. You can pass it through the juicer if you remove the skin and white rind. Alternatively, juice the lemon as you would usually and measure a 1:1 ratio with the ginger juice.

Add the cayenne pepper and the honey (or agave/maple) and stir well, to thoroughly combine.
